About

Marsden Grotto is a historical establishment located in Marsden Bay, South Shields, originally created in 1782 by Jack 'the Blaster' Bates and his wife. They blasted a cave into the coastal cliff to create a home, which later became an inn as it changed hands over the years. The Grotto has a rich history intertwined with smuggling activities and local legends, including tales of Jack the Jibber, a smuggler who met a grim fate.

Today, the Grotto operates as a hotel, beach bar, and seafood restaurant, offering ten boutique hotel rooms with views of Marsden Rock and the North Sea. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood dishes and is open daily for lunch and dinner. The venue also hosts weddings in its unique cave setting, providing a distinctive backdrop for ceremonies and celebrations.
